From The Chairman of the Western Area Judo Association

As you will no doubt be aware, this year is my last in my current term of office. On completion at April 25th 2015, I will have served the Area in the capacity of Chairman and Vice-Chairman for a total of 28 years - or in more explicit terms, over a “quarter of a century”!!! “What”, I hear you say, “all that time, good grief!!”

Your County Chairmen already have this information and I have asked them to look amongst their member clubs to see if a candidate will be forthcoming for this important role. All details in respect of this are published on the web-site together with this letter to you all.

I have had a long time to think of what I can say when it comes to the closing of a ‘chapter’ that has taken so long to complete. The journey has been truly amazing as you are an outstanding Area and it has been a privilege and an honour to serve you for such a long time in this prestigious position. I have made every effort at all times to represent you in a manner that I hope you have approved of - wherever I have been on your behalf and whatever I have said or done.

I can almost count on one hand the moments that have been awkward to deal with in the Area throughout this period of time and, in hindsight, I could perhaps have dealt with those few occasions better - but then of course hindsight is a wonderful thing.

The Executive committee has supported me throughout, without which the whole system would not have worked, and I would not have been able to carry out my job. Each and every one of them has played a pivotal role in the day to day workings of the Area, whether as County Chairmen or in one of the many roles that makes up the varied parts of the Commissions. To them I say a special thank you and this is not just the current Executive, it is over the years to all of you.

Over the years I suspect a few feathers have been ruffled, but that is the nature of any position that carries authority. However, I have always done this with the best of intentions for the progress of the Western Area - so with that in mind, I feel that I have done my duty to you, my Area.

I will still be around the circuit as I also have two roles outside the Chairmanship, one as a Senior Examiner of the BJA and the second as Senior Club Coach running Exmouth Vikings Judo Club in Devon.

I have told the Executive that I will, if required, continue for a further term - on the understanding that if a candidate is found and is happy to take the reins immediately, I retire on the 25th April 2015 at the completion of the AGM.

However, if a potential candidate would prefer, I am also willing to take the lead for two years of the four year term, and let the candidate act as Vice-Chairman, attending all duties I carry out so they become familiar with the position - eventually to take over in 2017.

Finally, if no candidate is forthcoming, the chairman’s role would not be unfilled as I would complete a final four year term whilst the Executive find a suitable candidate, but that would have to be the very final term.

Thank you each and every one of you for your trust and loyalty and support over this vast time.

Dave Allen
